The Po Klong Garai Towers: From Ancient Shrine to Living Cham Symbol
Tháp Po Klong Garai: Từ di tích cổ đến biểu tượng sống của người Chăm
Nguồn: Vietnamnet
Rising above Trau Hill in Khanh Hoa province, the red‑brick Po Klong Garai towers are a rare example of Cham architecture that still hosts daily rituals. Understanding their story shows how a medieval monument continues to shape Cham identity today.
Historical records show the complex was built in the late 13th or 14th century. It was first dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, but later became a shrine for King Po Klong Garai, who is remembered for advancing agriculture and irrigation.
The site contains three main towers. The Main (Chinh) Tower rises about 20.5 m, the Gate (Cong) Tower frames the entrance, and the Fire (Lua) Tower is topped with a distinctive boat‑shaped roof. All three are decorated with columns, niches, lotus motifs and other ornamental patterns.
According to Nguyen Thi Thu, former director of the Ninh Thuan Cham Cultural Research Centre, the Mukhalinga at the complex merges the traditional linga symbol with the face of King Po Klong Garai. She says this illustrates how the Cham people adapted Indian religious ideas to honour their own ruler.
Traditional ceremonies are still performed at the towers, and the annual Kate festival attracts many Cham residents and visitors. These events link the monument to the community’s daily and spiritual life, keeping ancient customs alive.
Recognised as a special national relic in 2016, the towers now require careful conservation. Thu stresses that restoration should rely on scientific research and that Cham community members must be consulted in every step of management and promotion.
