A nearly 160‑year‑old house in Loc Yen village, Da Nang, hides a puzzling piece of furniture that still turns under a visitor’s hands. The rotating table not only attracts curiosity but also reveals the high level of skill possessed by traditional Vietnamese carpenters.
The house, owned by the fifth‑generation custodian Nguyen Dinh Man, is built mainly from jackfruit wood and follows the traditional nha ruong timber‑framed style. Its three bays and two side wings reflect the architectural heritage of central Vietnam, while the surrounding garden of fruit trees adds a tranquil backdrop.
At the centre of the reception area stands a jackfruit‑wood table whose round top measures about 80 cm in diameter and can rotate when visitors rest their hands lightly on it. Nguyen Thi Tuyen, 80, explained that the motion may be linked to mechanical principles, magnetic fields, or special construction techniques developed by carpenters in the Van Ha woodworking village.
Man, now 72, has turned down offers worth many tens of thousands of dollars in order to keep the house and its contents intact. He says preserving the building is more important than any financial gain, because it embodies the legacy of his ancestors.
About 300 m from the house, another family keeps a similar rotating table. This proximity suggests the technique was known locally.
Together, the rotating table and the well‑preserved home illustrate how traditional craftsmanship can create enduring, almost magical, objects. They remind us that cultural heritage lives not only in walls but also in the ingenious details crafted by past generations.
