The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help sits in Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital, and it instantly catches the eye with its mix of European and Vietnamese styles. Visitors and students of architecture can see how two traditions blend in one building.

According to the Archdiocese of Hue, construction started in 1959, finished in 1962, and the design was created by Nguyen My Loc, an architect who graduated in Paris. The church is one of Hue’s two largest Catholic churches.

The façade shows classic Gothic Revival arches and a central tower that rises 53 meters. Terracotta‑tiled roofs, common in Vietnamese architecture, cover the roof, which reaches 32 meters, and an octagonal bell tower with three broad, tiered roofs recalls traditional communal houses and pagodas.

Inside, the building keeps Western features such as stained‑glass windows and a vaulted interior, while the exterior displays East Asian touches like layered tiled roofs and interlocking rooflines. This combination creates a rhythmic pattern that highlights both cultures.

The church therefore stands as a clear example of cultural fusion, where European Gothic Revival design meets Vietnamese architectural tradition. Its striking appearance reminds us that East and West can coexist beautifully in a single structure.
