What 100 Bowls of Noodles Teach About Quality Over Quantity

The story of a Japanese noodle shop that caps its daily sales at 100 bowls offers a clear lesson for Vietnamese businesses. It shows how focusing on quality can build trust and long‑term success, a topic many entrepreneurs want to explore.
The 2026 Corporate Culture Forum took place in Hanoi on October 13, organized by Van Hoa Newspaper and the Hanoi Small and Medium Enterprises Association. Its theme was “Corporate Culture – An Internal Driving Force for Sustainable Development,” and speakers presented eight core values to guide Vietnam’s business community. Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Huy Dung used the noodle‑shop story to illustrate why quality should trump volume.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Huy Dung recalled Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s earlier remark, “If the economy determines how fast we can move, culture determines how far we can go.” The quote links cultural strength to long‑term progress.
According to the deputy minister, some noodle shops in Japan sell exactly 100 bowls a day, no matter how many customers are waiting. He explained that the craftsman’s energy and dedication are enough to keep exceptional quality for those 100 bowls, but beyond that fatigue reduces the standard. The example shows that honoring a commitment to quality is more important than trying to maximise sales.
Vietnamese companies can learn that limiting production to preserve quality helps build trust, integrity and sustainable growth. By putting quality before sheer volume, businesses are more likely to achieve lasting success.
