Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG) has turned a corner after more than ten years of debt restructuring. Its recent profit surge and debt cut make the story useful for anyone interested in how a struggling agribusiness can recover.
According to HAG’s consolidated financial statements for the first half of 2026, net profit rose to $81.9 million, up from $32.2 million a year earlier. At the same time, financial debt fell to $332.3 million by June 30 2026, down from about $1.08 billion in 2018.
Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc now stresses careful capital allocation, concentrating on bananas, durian and coffee. He also reminded that past over‑investment in rubber and oil palm had created $1.39 billion in liabilities by the end of 2016.
HAG plans to expand coffee cultivation to 20,000 hectares by 2028, a move that will require an estimated $549.5 million in funding. The company expects to raise the money through bonds, retained earnings and other fundraising initiatives.
The turnaround shows that disciplined investment and a clear focus on profitable crops can revive a heavily indebted agribusiness. HAG’s experience teaches that financial discipline is as important as market vision.
