Thailand is preparing a new pilot programme that will let transit passengers explore the country for free. The programme will begin in early 2027 at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Krabi airports, making a layover more interesting.
The initiative targets international travelers with layovers of six to eight hours. It lets them leave the airport for brief excursions to nearby cities or attractions, then return for their onward flights.
Three itinerary categories are being developed. Cultural and historical tours may include the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Ancient City; food‑focused tours will showcase Thai street food; health‑and‑wellness packages may offer spa treatments and traditional Thai massage.
The program aims to attract about 10% of the roughly 1.3 million annual transit passengers at Suvarnabhumi, and it will initially offer the tours free of charge. By turning long stopovers into short sightseeing experiences, the initiative hopes to encourage visitors to spend time and money in Thailand.
If you have a six‑to‑eight‑hour layover, the free tours could turn your waiting time into a short vacation. The programme’s goal is to make Thailand a stronger regional transport hub while giving travelers a quick taste of the country.
