Japan has told tourism businesses that they can set their own prices and that local governments can decide taxes. This news is important for anyone planning to travel to Japan because it may change how much things cost.
Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Norio Kimura said the government will not comment on rates for foreign tourists. The agency also said tourism operators should generally decide their own prices, including different rates for different visitor groups.
The agency is preparing pricing guidelines to help operators make decisions and to give customers clear explanations for any price differences. It also said that decisions on tourism taxes, such as lodging taxes, are left to local discretion and do not necessarily apply only to foreign visitors.
Japan wants more foreign visitors to stay overnight in regional areas. The agency aims to raise regional overnight stays to 130 million a year by 2030, up from 60.56 million in 2025, to ease pressure on big cities like Tokyo and Osaka.
