UN chief Antonio Guterres said the "war on nature has not yet ended" while launching a global report on biodiversity shortfalls. He warned that the report highlights how far the world is from the actions needed to protect nature.
The 2030 biodiversity goal aims to protect 30 percent of the planet’s land and oceans, but Guterres said many of the related targets are already off track. This shortfall threatens the ability to halt species loss and ecosystem collapse.
Countries have pledged to cut harmful subsidies by $500 billion each year by 2030, but the UN report says little progress has been made. These subsidies support fossil fuel production, mining and intensive agriculture.
UN figures show that for every $1 invested in protecting or restoring nature, about $30 still goes into activities that degrade it. Sue Lieberman of the Wildlife Conservation Society warned that biodiversity is in crisis, with species disappearing and ecosystems collapsing.
