Deutsche Bank is preparing to enter the crypto world with a new custody service. This development matters because it shows a major traditional bank adapting to the growing digital economy.

Deutsche Bank is weeks away from launching its first digital‑asset service focused on crypto custody, the corporate banking chief told Reuters. The service aims to attract corporate clients interested in digital assets.

After the German launch, the bank will expand the custody platform to Asian financial centres next year, Gerald Podobnik, co‑head of the corporate bank, said at the IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. He highlighted the importance of reaching new markets in Asia.

Podobnik explained that the rollout is part of Deutsche Bank's plan to reach an 8% compound annual growth rate in corporate banking by 2028. He cited the rapid growth of the digital economy and the hundreds of billions of dollars held in stablecoins as new pools of value.

The phased rollout will first support custody of major cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and ether. Later, the service will add stablecoin capabilities, allowing clients to move money into and out of mainstream stablecoins.

By offering crypto custody, Deutsche Bank signals that tokenised and blockchain solutions will become a regular part of banking services. This shift could influence client offerings and the wider digital economy in the years ahead.
