Hong Kong’s kindergartens are vanishing at a record pace, with about 40 fewer schools this year. Understanding why helps us see how falling birth rates can directly shrink education services.
The Education Bureau’s online profile for the 2026/27 school year lists about 930 kindergartens, down from about 970 the year before. This represents a net loss of roughly 40 schools in a single year.
Births in Hong Kong fell to 31,053 in 2025, the lowest number since the statistics began in 1961. Provisional data show only 29,700 births in the 12 months to mid‑2026, the first time the figure dropped below 30,000.
Kentville Kindergarten, a private school in Kowloon Tong, said the closures are caused by low birth rates, the emigration of young families and staff retirements, according to the SCMP. Government‑subsidized kindergartens also rely on enrollment because their subsidies are tied to headcount, so some have added full‑day sessions to attract working parents.
The bureau reported that 32 kindergartens ceased operating in 2025/26 while nine new ones were registered. To counter the trend, it is offering relocation subsidies and cash incentives to encourage births and the opening of new schools.
The rapid disappearance of kindergartens shows how demographic decline can quickly affect education provision. Without more births or policy changes, the number of early‑childhood schools may keep falling.
