The recent unveiling of Tesla’s new Roadster, billed by Musk as a "flying car," sparked a lot of buzz. It is worth reading because the event directly affected the billionaire’s personal wealth and highlighted what investors really watch for.
The demo showed the new Tesla Roadster climbing a steep ramp, flipping in the air, using ten nozzles and ultra‑high‑pressure air tanks. It can accelerate from 0‑60 mph in under a second, with mass production slated for 2028.
According to Forbes real‑time data, Musk’s fortune dipped 2.11% to $925 billion after the reveal. Tesla’s stock fell 1.3% on Thursday, 4.9% over five days and 17% year‑to‑date, while SpaceX shares dropped 2.3% and are almost 8% down year‑to‑date.
Analysts note the Roadster reveal came as Tesla shifts focus to self‑driving technology and robotics, and just before the third‑quarter results that matter more to investors. Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, called the demo “an engineering flex with no commercial value,” while Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said the Roadster will be Tesla’s new “halo car.”
The episode shows that flashy product demos can hurt a CEO’s net worth when the market is waiting for solid earnings. Investors still prioritize financial performance over hype, so companies need to balance spectacle with results.
