Finnish investment in Vietnam has exceeded US$1 billion, mainly in technology, energy and data centres. This level of investment shows how high‑level ties can become real economic opportunities, which is why the story matters for Vietnam.
Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio visited Vietnam on October 15‑16 with a business delegation that had not yet operated in the country. He said the delegation was looking for its first local partners and pointed to sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, 5G/6G, green technology and data centres.
The Viettel‑ICEYE memorandum of understanding illustrates how Finnish research support, Business Finland assistance and investment capital helped a satellite start‑up grow. This example shows the network of universities, support organisations and investors behind a technology company.
Tavio highlighted Finland’s practical advantages for data centres: a cold climate reduces cooling costs and electricity is sold at competitive prices. He also warned that expanding power generation capacity is a shared challenge for both countries. The minister added that market openness, a stable regulatory environment and financing are essential for Finnish businesses to invest in Vietnam.
Vietnam can learn from Finland’s model that links universities, support agencies and investors, and that relies on clear financing and an open market. Turning strategic partnerships into concrete projects could boost innovation and attract further foreign investment.
