Vietnam’s Buddhist heritage is being transformed by digital technology. The changes bring both chances to protect ancient teachings and worries about losing spiritual authenticity, a debate worth following.

Digital tools open new ways to preserve Vietnam’s Buddhist sites and texts, but experts caution that virtual religious practices and commercial uses could undermine the authenticity of Buddhist traditions. This tension was highlighted at a recent national scientific conference on the digital era of Vietnamese Buddhism.

According to the conference, Buddhist scriptures are being digitized, religious ceremonies are livestreamed, and artificial intelligence is beginning to interpret Buddhist teachings. These actions aim to keep the teachings accessible to a wider audience.

Core technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, 3D scanning, digital twins and virtual reality are being used to modernize the dissemination of Buddhist teachings. They help reach younger generations both inside Vietnam and abroad.

Participants warned that the spread of digital content may dilute and commercialize Buddhist teachings, and that a new “virtual spiritual practice” could weaken direct religious experience. They also noted a growing divide between in‑person and technology‑mediated engagement, and pointed out that digitization efforts remain fragmented, with no common standards, limited interoperability, and unresolved copyright and community‑rights issues.

In short, digital transformation can safeguard Buddhist heritage and expand its reach, but it also poses risks to authenticity and community cohesion. Balancing technology with genuine spiritual practice will be essential for the future of Vietnamese Buddhism.
