Tam Chuc Pagoda in Ninh Binh Province now hosts a Buddhist calligraphy exhibition. Over 150 works written in Vietnamese script are on display, and the show attracts many visitors, Buddhist followers and local residents.
The pieces show Buddhist scriptures, spiritual teachings and the words of revered masters. All are written in Quoc Ngu, the modern Vietnamese writing system, and each uses different brushwork and artistic styles.
Groups of visitors spend a long time looking at each work, reading the words and thinking about the teachings. Many people also line up to ask for a personal calligraphy piece that means peace, wisdom or virtuous living.
Venerable Thich Minh Quang, Deputy Abbot of Tam Chuc Pagoda, said that writing helps keep the nation’s moral principles alive. He added that Buddhist calligraphy is a medium for communicating teachings and spreading Buddhist culture.
He hopes that Buddhist calligraphy in Vietnamese script will move beyond exhibitions into pagodas, monasteries and everyday life. If this happens, it could add to moral education, spiritual enrichment and a stronger sense of compassion in the community.
