The recent haze over Singapore is more than a distant news story – it changes the air you breathe, the way you travel and the precautions you must take. Understanding the cause and the government’s actions helps you stay safe when the sky turns grey.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the haze originated from forest and peatland fires in Indonesia, exacerbated by a prolonged dry spell. He added that Singapore will do everything it can to protect Singaporeans while working with neighbours to address the problem.
According to The Straits Times, Singapore’s Pollutant Standards Index reached a season high of 212 on Oct. 15, placing the air quality in the unhealthy range. This level means that sensitive groups should limit outdoor activities.
The Singapore government is providing N95 masks and opening air‑conditioned shelters at community clubs and Residents’ Network centres for vulnerable residents. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the government will do everything it can to protect Singaporeans, urging people to look after themselves and others.
The Transboundary Haze Pollution Act, enacted in 2014, allows fines of up to SGD 2 million for offenders whose fires keep the PSI in the unhealthy range for at least 24 hours. The law targets companies or individuals responsible for causing or condoning such fires.
Even a short period of haze can affect everyday routines, but the government’s mask distribution, shelter programme and legal penalties aim to minimise health risks and discourage future fires. Staying informed and using the provided protection can keep you safe during these episodes.
