Travelers in Southeast Asia are changing the way they vacation. Affluent tourists are now favoring shorter, experience‑focused trips, a trend that could affect how you plan and spend on your next holiday.
After a sharp drop in demand during the second quarter because of the U.S.–Iran war, occupancy and average room rates recovered in the third quarter, according to CEO Choe Peng Sum. The rebound gave the group confidence to continue ten new construction and major renovation projects across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines through 2027, including luxury hotels in Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
CEO Choe Peng Sum said higher travel costs and geopolitical uncertainty are pushing affluent travelers to pick nearer destinations and shorter haul trips. He noted many luxury guests now prefer regional vacations over long‑distance journeys.
Even though travelers are cutting back on long‑distance journeys, they are not reducing their overall spending. Choe Peng Sum explained that guests are willing to pay for experiences rather than just a bed, and many are choosing premium options such as hotel club lounges.
Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore are seeing especially strong demand. In Singapore, double‑digit growth in the third quarter was driven by major events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix and business conferences, while shifts in Chinese travel patterns—partly due to tensions with Japan—are bringing more affluent independent travelers from China and India to the region.
The shift toward shorter, experience‑rich trips shows that higher costs and uncertainty are not stopping travel, but are reshaping it. As hotels adapt with more premium amenities, you may find your next vacation in Southeast Asia both shorter and richer in experiences, though likely at a higher price.
