Why International Graduates in Australia Find It Hard to Get Jobs Matching Their Degrees

Vì sao cử nhân nước ngoài tại Úc khó tìm việc đúng chuyên ngành

International graduates in Australia often find it hard to secure jobs that use their degrees. Understanding why this happens can help students set realistic career plans while studying abroad.

Many Australian employers say they favour Australian citizens or permanent residents, and they give extra weight to candidates who already have Australian work experience. An engineering employer told Jobs and Skills Australia that, when comparing two CVs, they would usually choose the one with three years of local experience over one with similar international experience.

Visa rules add another obstacle. Jobs and Skills Australia reported that some businesses are unsure about the conditions of the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) and worry they might unintentionally break immigration laws. This uncertainty makes them less likely to hire international graduates on temporary visas.

The 2025 Graduate Outcomes Survey by the Australian Department of Education showed that 26.3 % of international undergraduate graduates and 38.7 % of international postgraduate coursework graduates felt their full‑time jobs did not fully use their skills. A 2025 study by Jobs and Skills Australia also found that international graduates are less likely than domestic peers to obtain work matching their qualifications and that they generally earn less.

On top of these barriers, Australia’s labour market has cooled, prompting employers to be more cautious about recruitment. This broader slowdown reduces the number of positions available for all graduates, and it hits international graduates especially hard because they compete with candidates who have unrestricted work rights.

Overall, a mix of employer preferences, visa uncertainty, lower skill utilisation and a slowing job market explains why many international graduates struggle to find work that matches their qualifications. Recognising these factors can help students plan better pathways during and after their studies.
