A massive 3,400‑metric‑ton steel arch has just reached downtown Ho Chi Minh City after a long river trip. Its arrival highlights the complex work needed to move huge structures through busy waterways.
The barge carrying the arch arrived at Bach Dang Wharf after a two‑day, 124‑kilometre journey from Dai Dung Shipyard in Vung Tau. The delivery took place at around 3:00 pm on Monday.
During the trip, the towing convoy had to steer through many sharp bends. Captains needed intense concentration and performed meticulous calculations for each change of direction.
Waterway traffic police, border guard forces and other relevant units stayed on duty to guide the convoy and to regulate other river traffic. Their coordination helped keep the route clear and safe.
The arch belongs to a 720‑meter pedestrian bridge whose design is inspired by the nipa palm leaf and includes a 187‑meter steel arch. The project is more than 90 % finished and was built under a VND1 trillion (US$38.6 million) build‑transfer model without direct government payment.
Residents lined the Saigon River to watch the barge, with many saying they were impressed by the arch’s size and colour. Their reaction shows how such engineering feats capture public interest and pride.
