Vietnam’s Renewable Future at Risk Without More Trained Workers
Tương lai năng lượng tái tạo của Việt Nam đứng trước nguy cơ thiếu nhân lực

Vietnam’s clean‑energy industry is growing fast, but a shortage of trained workers could slow its progress. Understanding this gap helps readers see why the country’s renewable future depends on education.
Dr. Do Van Long, head of energy research at VIOIT, said Vietnam will need 60,000‑80,000 wind workers, 40,000‑50,000 solar workers and 10,000‑15,000 green‑hydrogen workers by 2030. These numbers illustrate the huge demand for skilled staff in the next decade.
Le Dinh Kha, rector of Cao Thang Technical College, noted the college graduates about 3,200 practical‑engineering students each year, while businesses want roughly three times more workers. The gap means many projects could struggle to find qualified staff.
Dr. Long also warned that training institutions lack practical equipment, simulation labs, and that lecturers have few opportunities to work on large‑scale renewable projects. To fix this, he proposed investing in 10‑15 key vocational colleges and creating specialised programmes for offshore wind, green hydrogen and smart grids. At the conference, VIOIT and Cao Thang Technical College signed a memorandum of understanding to align curricula with business needs and to study AI, automation and clean‑energy applications.
If Vietnam does not close the training gap, its ambitious renewable targets may remain out of reach and job opportunities will be limited. Strengthening vocational education is therefore essential for the country’s green future.
