On Oct. 6 Alstom and Vingroup signed a 200‑train contract, according to Alstom’s statement. The deal includes 83 trains built in France and 117 to be assembled in Vietnam, a partnership that could reshape Hanoi’s public transport landscape.
Each train will have five aluminum‑alloy cars. Alstom said this design reduces axle loads, lowers energy consumption and minimizes track wear. The trains will run at GoA‑4, the highest automation level, meaning they operate without drivers.
Vingroup, through its subsidiary Vinhomes, is constructing new metro lines that will total 303.5 km. Construction began in June and is expected to finish in 2030, linking downtown Hanoi with Noi Bai International Airport, the city’s northern and southern districts, and the high‑tech hub of Hoa Lac.
Vingroup is Vietnam’s largest listed company, controlled by Pham Nhat Vuong, whose net worth is $32.4 billion. By assembling 117 trains locally, the project adds a significant manufacturing component to the country’s rail sector.
