The Mariamman festival is an annual 10‑day Hindu celebration held at Mariamman Temple in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. It honors the goddess Mariamman and is known for its bright colours and lively atmosphere. Many people come to watch and take part, making it a special event in the city.
The festival includes a palanquin procession that circles the temple three times. Priests carry oil lamps and a sacred flame, and worshippers join the fire‑blessing ritual, mark their foreheads with a red dot, and make offerings of flowers and fruit. These rituals show the traditional Hindu worship practiced at the temple.
Mariamman is a South Indian mother goddess linked to rainfall, fertility and protection against disease, and she is respected in rural Indian communities. The temple was first built for Ho Chi Minh City’s Indian Hindu community, but today it welcomes local residents and visitors from many backgrounds. The grounds are decorated with colorful flowers, mango leaves, coconut fronds and banana plants, and large crowds gather to enjoy the sights.
The festival is a vivid example of Indian Hindu traditions mixing with Vietnamese participation. It helps different communities come together and share a joyful, cultural experience.
