Indonesia’s wildfires have become a regional crisis, and the resulting haze is affecting millions of people across Southeast Asia. Understanding how the smoke harms health and everyday life shows why the fire problem matters to everyone.
Satellite data from the independent monitor Nusantara Atlas show that the fires have burned more than 1.9 million hectares in the nine months up to September. Experts say the blazes are largely caused by slash‑and‑burn land‑clearing and a severe El Niño‑driven drought.
The haze has pushed air‑pollution levels to dangerous levels not only in Indonesia but also in Malaysia, Singapore and East Timor. Such pollution threatens breathing health and can affect everyday routines.
President Prabowo warned that the fires endanger the health of millions and called the deliberate burning a ‘crime against humanity’. He said he has asked police, the Attorney General’s Office and other agencies to investigate the cause of the fires.
The spread of hazardous haze means many citizens must cope with poor air quality, which can affect everyday activities. This situation shows how an environmental disaster can quickly become a public‑health crisis for the region.
