The latest Forbes data shows that Robin Zeng, Gautam Adani and Masayoshi Son each lost billions of dollars this week. Understanding why their net worth fell helps explain how stock markets and company performance can instantly affect even the biggest fortunes.
Robin Zeng, chair of battery maker CATL, lost US$5.9 billion when the company’s shares fell 3.3%, a 42% drop for the year. The fall was linked to slower profit growth, weaker margins, tougher competition and the loss of Chinese tax incentives.
Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, saw his wealth drop by US$2.9 billion as Adani Enterprises shares slipped 1.8% and were down 15% over the past month. In addition, backer GQG Partners sold more than US$1.35 billion of Adani holdings, raising doubts about institutional investor confidence.
Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank Group, experienced a US$2.8 billion loss when SoftBank shares fell 6.9%, a 23% decline over six months. The drop was part of a broader weakening of AI‑related stocks, driven by concerns over the company’s high debt levels.
These cases show that billionaire wealth is highly sensitive to stock price movements and company fundamentals. Slower profits, stronger competition, loss of tax benefits, and waning investor confidence can all shrink fortunes dramatically in a short time.
