Japan's National Police Agency said it will start a cashless payment system for minor traffic violations in July 2027. This change will let people pay fines online instead of only at banks.
The traffic notices, called blue tickets, will carry QR codes. Scanning the code with a smartphone opens a payment website where the driver can type the amount, pick a method and finish the payment.
Offenders will be able to use credit cards, smartphone payment services or other cashless ways, and they can also choose cashless apps, convenience‑store payment services or internet banking. Each transaction will add a processing fee of several hundred yen. The agency will roll the system out nationwide in phases and will choose a payment‑processing contractor by the end of the year.
Payments at bank or post‑office counters will still be possible and will have no fee. The new system aims to make paying small traffic fines easier while keeping cash options.
