The Saigon Leaf pedestrian bridge is set to become a new icon on the Saigon River. Its design mixes Vietnamese cultural motifs with modern engineering, making it a case worth studying.
The city’s brief asked for a striking landmark that reflects Ho Chi Minh City’s identity and sets it apart from other tropical metropolises such as Singapore and Bangkok. Architects answered by drawing on the winding waterways and iconic nipa palm groves of southern Vietnam, naming the concept the “Saigon Leaf.”
The bridge’s centerpiece is a 187‑metre span formed by three interconnected steel arches shaped like nipa palm leaves. This leaf‑shaped arch creates an 80‑metre wide navigation channel with 10 metres of vertical clearance and reduces the number of river piers by placing the main supports near the banks.
Construction began in March 2025, and the main span was joined in October 2026. The bridge, funded by food company NutiFood with an investment of nearly VND 1 trillion (US$39.5 million), is scheduled to open to the public in February 2027.
When completed, the Saigon Leaf will show how cultural symbols can guide bridge design while still meeting practical engineering needs. It offers a clear example of Vietnamese heritage shaping modern public infrastructure.
