Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited the ancient town of Hoi An in Vietnam. He met local residents and tourists, shook hands and took photos. The visit was a chance to remember architect Kazimierz Kwiatkowski, who saved many Vietnamese heritage sites.
Architect Kazimierz Kwiatkowski worked for many years to protect Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary and the Hue Monuments. His research and dossier preparation took almost 20 years, and Hoi An was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site on December 4, 1999.
During the visit, Tusk laid flowers at a monument dedicated to Kwiatkowski, who is also called Kazik by locals. He praised Kwiatkowski’s contributions and said the ceremony shows the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Poland. Polish officials said the visit aimed to identify cooperation areas such as education, trade, culture and people‑to‑people exchanges, and the ceremony was held in front of many residents and tourists.
Kwiatkowski’s work helped Hoi An and My Son become UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites and also protected the Hue Monuments. His memory is now honored by Poland’s leader, reminding us that protecting culture can bring countries closer together.
