The growing lack of parking in Vietnam’s biggest cities is not just a traffic issue – it directly changes how people sleep, spend money and travel to work. Readers will see how a common urban problem can affect their own routine and wallet.
Huu Thang says he must leave home at 6:05 a.m. and wake at 5:30 a.m. to try to claim one of about 15 parking spaces at his office. He adds that arriving just ten minutes later adds ten to fifteen minutes to his commute. If he cannot find a spot, he pays VND50,000 (about US$1.94) per day for uncertain outside parking.
Ngoc Tram, another office worker in Hanoi, now uses the metro and a folding bicycle for part of her journey, saying the change spares her the daily stress of searching for parking. She switched after finding early‑morning attempts to find a space exhausting and unreliable.
Vehicle sales in Vietnam jumped to 494,300 cars in 2024, a 22 % rise from the previous year, and rose again to more than 604,000 in 2025, another 22 % increase. Figures presented at a conference on Hanoi’s Traffic Congestion Reduction Project show that Hanoi had about 9.2 million motor vehicles by late 2025, while parking supply meets only 8‑10 % of demand.
To curb the chronic shortage, Hanoi started charging VND50,000 per hour for temporary street parking on October 15. The fee targets drivers who park on roads or sidewalks, hoping to push them toward official lots.
The shortage forces employees to wake up earlier, pay extra fees and even change how they travel, illustrating the personal cost of rapid car growth. Understanding this impact helps city dwellers see why better parking solutions matter for everyday life.
