A recent rescue in Da Lat shows how hidden dangers can affect hikers. Reading this short story gives useful safety tips for anyone who walks in the mountains.
On October 25, Malaysian national Goh Shu Wen was hiking on Hon Bo Mountain in Da Lat. She accidentally fell into an abandoned mining pit that is about 10 metres deep.
Police said the pit’s opening was only about 70 centimetres wide. Rescuers had to build a support frame over the opening and lower a team member with ropes to bring her out.
She injured her right ankle, received first aid at the scene, and was taken to Lam Dong Provincial General Hospital. Authorities urged tourists to hike carefully in fog or rain, choose safe routes, travel in groups, and inform family of their itinerary.
