Ho Chi Minh City has rolled out a massive $14 billion traffic‑relief plan that targets 28 congestion hotspots across the metropolis. The initiative is expected to make daily travel faster and less stressful for millions of commuters.
According to the municipal Department of Construction, the plan includes 98 infrastructure projects worth about VND360.841 trillion. Fifteen of the hotspots are scheduled to be solved in the 2026‑27 period, while the remaining thirteen will be addressed between 2028 and 2030. This timetable gives the city a clear roadmap for reducing gridlock.
The projects cover major road expansions, new bridges, expressways and several metro extensions. Notable works include the An Phu and My Thuy intersections, the Nguyen Khoai bridge‑road, extensions of metro lines 1, 2 and 6, and the Thu Thiem‑Long Thanh railway line. Together they aim to increase capacity on the most crowded routes.
Municipal agencies will also use operational tools such as traffic re‑routing, signal timing changes, median adjustments and lane expansions to keep traffic flowing while construction proceeds. These measures aim to minimise disruption for daily commuters.
City officials warn that the rollout faces several obstacles. Delays in relocating technical infrastructure, lengthy planning approvals, shortages of construction materials and the need to revise consulting documents have already slowed progress. Overcoming these issues will be crucial for meeting the 2026‑2030 deadlines.
If the projects stay on schedule, many of today’s traffic jams could disappear, giving commuters smoother and quicker journeys. Yet any further setbacks could push back the promised improvements, so the city’s ability to solve these challenges will determine the plan’s real impact.
