Why Sustainable Water Sources Matter for Central Highlands Water Projects
Vì sao nguồn nước bền vững là yếu tố sống còn với dự án cấp nước Tây Nguyên

Finding a stable water source is essential for water supply projects in the Central Highlands, because without it the systems risk delivering water only in the rainy season and failing in the dry months. This article explains why the issue matters for local families.
The gravity‑fed water system in Krong Duan Village, which serves over 260 Xo Dang households, has deteriorated over the years. As a result, the system cannot provide enough water during the dry season, leaving many households short of water.
Resident Y Chinh says her family must collect water from an irrigation canal and depend on neighbours who have private wells for drinking and cooking. She notes that she has to request water four to five times a day, highlighting the severe shortage during the dry months.
About 80‑90 % of the yearly rain falls during the six‑month rainy season, while only 10‑15 % arrives in the six‑month dry season. This creates a strong seasonal water imbalance.
The water supply system in Dak Rve Commune was built in 1997 to serve roughly 4,000 fee‑paying households. Le Duy Manh, Deputy Director of the Dak Rve Commune Public Utility Center, explained that the ageing treatment infrastructure can no longer process the high sediment loads, so the water becomes turbid after heavy rain.
Local officials, such as Phan Chi Thien, Chair of the Ya Ly Commune People's Committee, stress that future water‑supply investments must first survey and identify sustainable water sources. This step is essential to ensure long‑term operation and avoid repeated post‑investment failures.
