The hospital on Vietnam’s western border has become a vital health hub for people from neighboring Laos. By teaching doctors Lao, the facility hopes to turn language skills into better medical outcomes.

According to Ho Van Trong, director of Muong Lat General Hospital, the centre treats hundreds of Lao patients annually, and a number of them travel as far as 200 km to receive treatment. These long journeys often reflect limited options in their home communities.

Language barriers make it hard for patients to describe symptoms and for doctors to explain diagnoses and treatment plans, a problem that can delay accurate care. (P22‑24)

To address this, staff attended short‑term Lao‑language courses organised by Hong Duc University. More than 10 of the hospital’s 93 doctors, nurses and support workers now speak Lao – roughly one‑seventh of the workforce. (P25‑27)

When a doctor meets a language barrier, Lao‑speaking colleagues from any department step in as interpreters, ensuring the examination continues smoothly. Direct communication in Lao also enables patients to describe their conditions more clearly and helps doctors gather precise information and give understandable treatment instructions. (P28‑30)
