Apple may soon add facial recognition to its pricey foldable iPhone Duo. The possible upgrade could change how users unlock, pay and secure apps.
According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Apple is testing prototypes of the iPhone Duo 2 that place Face ID under the outer display. This under‑display design would let the sensor sit behind the screen instead of using a separate camera module.
The first‑generation iPhone Duo does not have Face ID; it relies on Touch ID instead, a shortcoming that many critics have highlighted because the phone costs nearly $2,000. Users have called the lack of facial recognition a major weakness.
Face ID has become a core security and convenience feature on modern iPhones, used for unlocking the device, approving payments and authenticating apps. By moving the sensor beneath the display, Apple hopes to keep the Duo’s ultra‑thin 5.2 mm profile while still offering these benefits.
Apple has said the Face ID system is still in the testing phase and may not be included in the final iPhone Duo 2. Until the technology proves reliable and manufacturable, its impact on everyday use remains uncertain.
If the under‑display Face ID makes it to market, Duo owners could enjoy faster, hands‑free unlocking and smoother payment experiences, bringing the foldable closer to the convenience of other iPhones. However, the feature is not yet guaranteed.
