Seoul is changing Jamsu Bridge from a car road to a place only for people. The city used a big food event to show why this change matters.
During the Car‑Free Jamsu Bridge Ttubeok‑Ttubeok Festival, 2,000 people dined at a 400‑meter yellow table on the bridge. The yellow colour was chosen to represent chicken.
Mayor Oh Se‑hoon said traffic analysis proved the bridge could work as a pedestrian‑only crossing and he hopes many citizens will love it. Vehicles were banned from the bridge from midnight on Oct. 26, and construction began on the first pedestrian‑only bridge over the Han River. Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross, and the work should finish in August 2027 with a wider deck, 22 river‑viewing spots, and transparent sections over navigation channels.
Jamsu Bridge opened in 1976 and is 795 m long. It sits low under Banpo Bridge, sometimes floods, and two of its four lanes were given to pedestrians and cyclists in 2008.
