On 8 October 2026, 48‑year‑old Queen Suthida of Thailand flew solo in a Swedish‑made JAS 39C Gripen fighter jet, becoming the world’s first reigning queen to do so. This milestone shows how a varied career can lead to historic firsts.
She started her working life as a flight attendant, first with Japan Airlines from 2000 to 2003 and then with Thai Airways until 2008. After leaving the airlines she joined the royal security service and later rose to deputy commander of the Royal Security Command.
Queen Suthida also earned a bachelor’s degree in communication arts from Assumption University. Before beginning her fighter‑jet training she had logged more than 1,188 flying hours, including over 450 hours on a Boeing 737‑800.
From June 2025 she entered a specialised Gripen programme that covered 45 academic subjects, 20 simulator sessions and 10 hours 13 minutes of supervised two‑seat flights. The training led to the historic solo flight on 8 October 2026.
Six days after the solo mission, she piloted a royal Boeing 737‑800 from Bangkok to Japan, flying from 14 October to 22 October. In addition to aviation, she won a sailing gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games and serves as the International Ice Hockey Federation’s first global ambassador for women’s ice hockey.
Queen Suthida’s journey from cabin crew to fighter‑jet pilot illustrates how determination and diverse experience can break new ground. Her story encourages anyone with big goals to pursue every opportunity.
