Swiss chocolate maker Lindt & Sprüngli is facing a sharp decline in market confidence after its shares fell more than 25% this year following a downgrade of its outlook. The situation offers a clear example of how a pricing error can quickly damage a beloved brand.
Executive Chairman Ernst Tanner admitted that the company misread the German market, overestimating how much it could raise prices without hurting demand. He said the firm misjudged consumer reaction to price increases, causing some products to become too expensive for shoppers.
The misstep was triggered by cocoa prices that reached historic highs from 2024 onward, prompting Lindt to try passing those costs onto customers. In response to weaker sales, the company has already cut some prices and hopes to lower them further once cocoa costs normalise.
Despite the setback in Germany, Tanner emphasized that Lindt is not in crisis. He reaffirmed growth targets of 6% to 8% in the Americas and the Far East, and confirmed there will be no group‑wide job cuts. However, bonuses in the Germany‑Switzerland‑Austria region will be reduced because targets were missed.
The episode shows that even a premium brand must align price changes with consumer sensitivity, or risk losing sales and seeing its share price tumble. Careful market reading is essential for maintaining both revenue and investor confidence.
