The Ka dong mask is a striking figure in the Long‑Tunic Dao’s night‑time initiation rites in northern Vietnam. Beyond its fierce look, it carries deep moral lessons and a strong sense of cultural pride.
According to Ban Xuan Trieu, head of the Dao Ethnic Culture Preservation Club, the Ka dong tradition grew from the Dao people’s difficult migrations. When new villages were founded, disease and wild animals constantly threatened them. To ward off evil spirits and protect lives, crops and future generations, the community created this fearsome figure.
Phan Van Chan, the chief ritual officiant, says Ka dong’s presence is compulsory in the Tam Thanh form of the Cap sac ceremony. He explains that the figure is summoned from the forest to use crossbows, knives and vigorous movements to drive away evil spirits. In doing so, Ka dong protects the initiate as he enters a new spiritual life.
The ceremony also uses Ka dong as a teacher of moral values. It reminds the initiate to honour his parents, care for his family, help his community and live a decent, compassionate life.
Dr Ban Tuan Nang, a Dao scholar, describes Ka dong as a spiritual bridge for Mun‑dialect communities. He says the figure embodies hopes for peace, good fortune and prosperity while passing down ancestral moral principles.
Artisans travel deep into the forest to find “Ca sang deng” wood, which Phan Sao Quang says is light, durable and resists cracking. The masks are hollowed to about 1 cm thick and coloured with natural pigments such as charcoal‑resin black and red earth vermilion, plus animal fur and paper details. Once finished, the mask is treated as a sacred object; Quang notes his family’s mask has been used in Cap sac ceremonies for seven generations, linking the community’s identity across time.
