Since its launch on 22 December 2024, Ho Chi Minh City’s Metro Line 1 has already recorded more than 40 million passenger journeys, with daily ridership now averaging over 70,000. The line’s popularity signals a clear shift in how residents travel across the city.

According to Van Thi Huu Tam, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway No. 1 Company Limited (HURC1), the line logged over 18 million journeys in the first nine months of 2026, confirming a steady rise in usage. Tam also said the line is linked to 68 bus routes, 11 motorbike parking facilities and offers connections to taxis, bicycles, electric motorbikes and water buses, creating a dense web of transport options.

Nguyen Thi Minh Anh, 34, explains that she now leaves her motorbike at home, takes a feeder bus to the metro and reaches central Ho Chi Minh City in about 20 minutes, avoiding exhaust fumes and dust. Her experience illustrates how the integrated service can make commuting both quicker and healthier.

Tran Quoc Dai, 29, adds that after alighting at Ben Thanh Station he rents a public bicycle and rides the remaining 500 metres to his office, gaining flexibility and a chance to exercise. This combination of metro and bike shows how the system supports active, multimodal travel.

The growing ridership and seamless links to buses, bikes and other modes are encouraging more residents to abandon their motorbikes for the metro. As a result, daily journeys become faster, cleaner and more enjoyable for Ho Chi Minh City’s population.
