Ho Chi Minh City is planning a 532‑kilometre metro network that it hopes to finish by 2035. Chairman Nguyen Van Duoc has asked the United Kingdom to cooperate on railway development, finance and education, seeing the project as a chance for Vietnam’s growth.
At the Autumn Economic Forum 2026, a UK delegation that included Baroness Winterton visited the city. The delegation said British firms are interested in supplying metro equipment and in creating training programmes for Vietnamese staff.
Currently almost 12,000 Vietnamese students study in the UK, and British universities are looking at opening branch campuses in Vietnam. These links could give more Vietnamese learners access to UK degrees without leaving home.
The city also wants British expertise, technology, management skills and financial resources for its metro and the planned International Financial Center. Both sides plan to build education and training connections that focus on STEM subjects and financial services, opening new career paths for Vietnamese professionals.
