Thailand’s long‑haul tourism market is being hit by visa‑processing problems, especially for travelers from Latin America. Understanding why these delays matter helps explain a sudden fall in tourist numbers.
According to Khaosod English, visa‑processing delays are disrupting Thailand's long‑haul tourism market, especially from Latin America, with passenger show‑up rates on some flights falling by 20%‑30%. The low show‑up rates mean airlines often fly with many empty seats, hurting revenue.
Emirates said that 20‑30 Mexican passengers per flight missed their flights because they had not received visas in time. The airline filed a complaint with the Tourism Authority of Thailand over the repeated disruptions.
Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports, led by Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul, will submit a proposal to the visa policy committee for visa exemptions for low‑security‑risk countries. The proposed exemption aims to simplify entry procedures, reduce travel disruptions, and restore confidence among international tour operators and airline partners.
The country recorded a 30% decline in Latin American arrivals and a 4.12% year‑on‑year drop in overall foreign tourist arrivals between Jan. 1 and Oct. 17. These figures show how visa hassles can quickly shrink a market, prompting the government to seek faster, easier entry for eligible visitors.
