Designing Climate‑Smart Rice Projects for Inclusive Impact and Carbon Cuts
Thiết kế dự án lúa gạo thông minh khí hậu: Tác động bao trùm và cắt giảm carbon

The Canada‑funded GORICE project aims to directly benefit 48,200 people and cut carbon emissions by about 748,000 metric tons by 2030. It shows how agriculture, technology and finance can be combined to fight climate change while improving livelihoods.
The project will apply low‑emission, high‑quality rice cultivation on 180,000 hectares in the Mekong Delta. By 2030 it expects to reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions by roughly 748,000 metric tons.
Training will teach farmers low‑emission techniques, while circular‑economy practices and new market links support greener rice sales. Green‑technology financing and a participatory digital measurement‑reporting‑verification system will track progress. Women make up 50 % of beneficiaries, and the project also targets youth and ethnic minorities.
Oxfam Vietnam leads the work together with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Institute of Agricultural Environment and local authorities, showing a strong multi‑stakeholder approach. The initiative is expected to improve the sector’s competitiveness, attract private investment and mobilise climate finance. In the long run, it aims to create lasting opportunities for farmers.
GORICE demonstrates that climate‑smart rice can be built on inclusive design, combining low‑emission methods, digital monitoring and shared financing. The model promises both lower carbon emissions and better livelihoods for thousands of Vietnamese farmers.
