A mass food‑poisoning incident at Ba Duoc Banh Mi Shop in Cam Thanh Ward, Quang Ngai Province, sickened 175 customers. The case draws attention because it has triggered legal action, compensation disputes, and tighter food‑safety checks.
Local authorities have proposed a fine of VND100 million (about US$3,880) for the shop’s owner. Nguyen Van Hung, chairman of the Cam Thanh Ward People’s Committee, said the fine is only a proposal and still needs approval from higher‑level officials.
The bakery has not finished paying compensation to the victims and has not reported the total amount it has already paid. Around 40 victims rejected the offered plan, arguing it does not fully cover health damage, lost income and wages during treatment.
After the poisoning, the ward has stepped up inspections and monitoring of food safety and hygiene standards. The area contains roughly 100 streetside banh mi carts.
The dispute shows how food‑safety failures can lead to financial penalties, contested compensation and stricter regulatory oversight. Both businesses and consumers must pay close attention to hygiene standards to avoid similar outcomes.
