Jacky Wong, owner of Kok Sen Restaurant, received a WhatsApp message on Oct. 31. The message said a cockroach was found in his food and demanded S$300 compensation, attaching photos and a receipt for more than S$110.
The sender used a Malaysian mobile number and turned on WhatsApp’s 24‑hour disappearing messages feature. All the chat was in English. Wong noticed the demand was urgent and the amount spent seemed too high for a short‑term need.
Wong searched Google Reviews and saw the same picture posted by another customer. The picture showed the same dishes, a soft‑drink can and the diner’s arm, but no cockroach, proving the insect was added digitally. He also saw that the receipt was copied from the review and dated Oct. 22, not Oct. 30 as claimed.
Wong’s restaurant has 22 CCTV cameras, and he filed a police report. The police can now check the video to confirm what really happened.
