Reading strategies

The nature of the test
Reading does not test your reading skill. It tests your ability to recognise synonyms.
1
Questions always paraphrase
The examiner takes an existing text and rewrites the questions using different words. All the difficulty lies there.
Keyword technique
1
Underline nouns and verbs in the question
2
Find their synonyms in the passage
This is the truly hard step.
3
Determine the word type needed for the blank
QuestionIn the passage → answer
more ______ lifestylea more relaxed way of life → relaxed
don’t have so much ______people have less money → money
worked as a ______joined the nurse corps → nurse
TRUE / FALSE / NOT GIVEN
1
Consider NOT GIVEN first
A common mistake is getting absorbed verifying true/false and forgetting this option entirely.
2
Matching keywords does not mean TRUE
You must match the information, not just the words.
3
Watch out for limiting words
only, never, always, all, more — usually FALSE, but not always.
4
Long statements: split into two parts
One half wrong = FALSE.
5
Not found after one pass → NOT GIVEN
Don’t force it.
Other question types
1
YES / NO / NOT GIVEN
Same rules as TFNG but tests the author’s opinion, not facts. Opinions usually need to be inferred.
2
Matching headings
The heading is the main idea. Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph.
3
Matching information
Do this last, when you’re familiar with the passage. Prioritise sentences with proper nouns, numbers, or unusual words.
4
Summary completion
If there’s a word bank, filter by word type first. If not, take the exact wording from the passage.
5
MCQ
Identify the "stem". All options appear in the passage — choose the one that matches the focus of the question.
6
Diagram / table
Easy marks. Use the exact wording; don’t change singular/plural.
7
Short answer
The question word tells you whether you need a noun, a number, or a phrase.
Time management

Reading has no separate answer-transfer time — this is the most common reason candidates run out of time.

1
Write directly on the answer sheet
Don’t write on the question paper and copy later.
2
Passages 1 and 2: under 20 minutes each
Save time for Passage 3.
3
No more than one minute per question
Flag it and come back.
4
Encounter an unknown word? Skip it
