From Repair Shop to Nation‑Wide Fiber Giant: The Uy Couple’s Rise
Dennis Uy started by repairing refrigerators and freezers for his uncle’s store, then sold Betamax and VHS tapes while in college. In 1997 he founded the dial‑up provider ComClark, and a year later he and Grace launched Converge.
Today Converge reports PHP44.8 billion in annual revenue, serves more than 3 million residential customers and holds roughly one‑third of the Philippine broadband market. These figures place the company just behind PLDT and ahead of Globe Telecom in market share.
When the firm needed money to expand nationally, the Uys relied on internal cash flow and even mortgaged family property to obtain bank loans. In 2019 they secured a $225 million investment from Warburg Pincus, and the following year they raised over $500 million through an IPO.
The COVID‑19 pandemic pushed Converge’s subscriber base to 1.7 million and sent its stock to an all‑time high in 2021, making the couple billionaires. Their net worth later fell to about $850 million as the shares cooled.
Since 2012 Converge has poured more than PHP120 billion into laying over 900,000 km of fiber‑optic cable, and it plans to increase spending by 13% to PHP20 billion while completing a PHP5 billion data centre in Pampanga. The Uy’s journey illustrates how a modest start can grow into a major national infrastructure player.
