78‑year‑old scrap collector’s honesty returns lost gold jewelry
On September 8, 2026, Nguyen Thi Mui was sorting rubbish in Neighborhood 41, Hiep Binh Ward. She saw a paper bag that held 15 gold rings, two gold necklaces, a gold bracelet and a gold pendant.
Mui took the bag to the Hiep Binh Ward Police. Officer Nguyen Van Dung told reporters that a receipt inside one of the boxes gave the buyer’s name, which helped the police trace the owner.
The jewelry belonged to 34‑year‑old Tran Thi Thuy Van. She said she had accidentally thrown the bag away while cleaning her home. Police checked the description with Van, confirmed it was her property, and gave it back the same day.
The police praised Mui’s honesty. She received a gift of VND 10 million (about US $380) and 10 kg of rice for returning the gold. Her story shows how honesty and cooperation with authorities can protect community trust.
