Hanoi Aims to Reduce Flooding with 'Sponge City' Plan
The Hanoi Department of Construction has started implementing flood prevention measures. Ten urgent projects are now complete and helping reduce flooding.
These projects include five lakes and five drainage infrastructure projects to help manage floodwater.
Two more projects, the Chem and Lien Mac 1 lakes, are being developed with private investment.
After four months, the flood control projects have been completed and are showing positive results.
Water levels in some areas are now lower and drain faster after rainfall. Drainage has also improved in several areas.
Despite this, some areas still experienced flooding during heavy rain on July 27 due to ongoing construction.
The Hanoi People's Committee has a plan to prepare for storms and reduce flooding during the rainy season.
Hanoi is accelerating 12 drainage projects.
The city will speed up 12 drainage projects and address obstacles to reduce flooding further.
Hanoi will prioritize investment in key infrastructure like lakes, pumping stations, and canals in several districts.
In the long term, Hanoi will study measures to align with its 100-year vision and apply the 'sponge city' model to new projects.
The plan is part of Hanoi's efforts to manage flooding.
