The Ministry of Health says hospitals set their own prices for organ transplants. A liver transplant can cost $38,000 at one hospital and $57,000 at another.
The Ministry of Health wants feedback on a new law about organ donation and transplants.
Organ transplant costs are not the same.
Vietnam does not have standard prices for organ transplants. Each hospital sets its own prices.
The new law will have rules for pricing organ transplants. This includes the cost of taking care of donors and doing the transplant.
There are 34 hospitals in Vietnam that can do organ transplants. The cost of a transplant is different at each hospital.
A liver transplant can cost $17,100 at one hospital and $55,100 at another. A kidney transplant can cost $7,400 to $15,000.
Some hospitals have higher costs for transplants than others. The cost of a liver transplant can be $55,100 and a kidney transplant can be $15,000.
Most transplant costs are paid for by health insurance. Some costs are paid by the hospital or donors.
The Ministry wants people to be at least 25 years old to donate organs to people outside their family.
Now, people 18 and older can donate organs. But the Ministry thinks 18 might be too young.
The new law says people must be at least 18 to donate to family members and at least 25 to donate to others.
The Ministry says people under 25 might have health problems later if they donate a kidney. Doctors do not want people to donate kidneys until they are 25.
Vietnam has done 11,187 organ transplants. Most of these were from living donors, not brain-dead donors.
The Ministry wants to allow organ donation after circulatory death, not just brain death.
To donate after brain death or circulatory death, a person must be 18 and have said they want to donate.
The new law will also allow people under 18 to donate organs if they have said they want to and their parents agree.
The person in charge is Vo Thu.
