Why Panama’s President Chose Hanoi’s Temple of Literature
The Temple of Literature was Vietnam’s first university. In its courtyard stand the 82 Doctors' Stelae, stone tablets that record the names of scholars who succeeded in the imperial examinations.
During the tour the couple examined a large wooden panel titled “Vinh quy bai to.” The artwork illustrates a scholar’s journey, from studying with a village teacher to passing imperial exams and returning home to honor his ancestors.
They also learned about a rare 80‑kilogram piece of agarwood called tram toc bong, displayed in the “Sac tam” exhibition. The fragrant wood is valued for its scent and is linked to spiritual and feng‑shui beliefs.
At an altar to teacher Chu Van An, the president and First Lady sounded the ceremonial “Thunder Drum,” a ritual that honors Vietnam’s tradition of respecting teachers.
