More trees in Edmonton have Dutch elm disease. This is two years after the first case.
The sick trees are in downtown and Delwood. They are the 15th and 16th cases.
Dutch elm disease is caused by a fungus. It spreads through roots and by beetles.
The disease is a big threat to Edmonton's trees. There are 90,000 elm trees in the city.
The two trees showed signs of the disease. The city did tests to confirm.
The city will remove the sick trees. This will start on Friday.
The city will also remove trees near the sick ones. This is to stop the disease from spreading.
The sick tree parts will be thrown away. This will be done at the waste center.
The city will not remove all trees in the area. The sick tree's roots did not spread.
The two trees were on city land. The city will watch the area closely and do more tests.
There were four new cases before this. They were in the Glengarry and Rossdale areas.
In July, there were three more cases. They were in the Calder, Northmount, and Rossdale areas.
Before this summer, there were seven cases. The disease was first found in Edmonton in 2024.
The city does not know how the disease came to Edmonton. It often comes through firewood or infected trees.
The city asks people to help stop the disease. Do not bring firewood from other places to Edmonton.
What are the signs of Dutch elm disease?
Leaves on sick trees may wilt and turn brown. This happens from June to July.
Trees that get sick later in summer may turn yellow. Their leaves may fall off early.
If you peel the bark on sick twigs, you may see brown stains.
