Hall’s motivation began when his son Tony, now a violist with a Finnish chamber orchestra, asked his father to repair his own violins. Watching Tony’s progress sparked Hall’s curiosity about the violin family and led him to take on the new project.

On the opening day of Hall’s new store, Black Creek Music Merchants, local fiddle player Ellen Hubble walked in and immediately commissioned the bespoke instrument. She wanted a violin that reflected her community roots and personal story.

Throughout the six‑month build, Hall kept Hubble involved by sending photos and text updates of the timber selection, carving stages, and final assembly. The workshop was filled with glue pots, wood shavings, and hand planes, all used in the traditional woodworking process.

When the violin was finally finished, its sound and appearance combined Australian timber with classic European design. Hubble held the instrument for the first time, burst into tears, and described the experience as ‘once‑in‑a‑lifetime.’

The violin shows how local material, months of skilled hand‑crafting, and close collaboration between maker and musician can create a truly unique instrument that resonates with both its creator and its player.
